Why not do a Day 3 transfer instead?

Day 3 embryos have a lower implantation rate compared to Day 5 blastocysts. Waiting until Day 5 allows the embryologist to select the absolute strongest embryos, as many weak embryos stop growing between Day 3 and Day 5.

Is there a risk that no embryos reach the blastocyst stage?

Yes, this is a risk. On average, only about 40% to 50% of fertilized eggs survive to become blastocysts. If a patient has very few embryos, the medical team will discuss whether a Day 3 transfer is safer.
