Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a highly specialized micro-fertilization technique used in conjunction with IVF. While traditional IVF combines eggs and sperm in a dish and relies on the sperm to fertilize the egg naturally, ICSI takes the process a step further. Under a high-power microscope, a single healthy, structurally normal sperm is selected and injected directly into the cytoplasm of each mature egg. This bypasses structural barriers, egg membrane thickness, or low sperm motility, and provides excellent fertilization rates in cases of severe male factor infertility.

Egg Retrieval

The sperm is injected directly into the center of the egg.
Incubation

Are there any additional risks with ICSI?
ICSI has been used for decades and is highly safe. Because it selects a single sperm, it does not increase the risk of birth defects significantly compared to standard IVF, though it is associated with a tiny risk of damage to the egg membrane (less than 5%).
Does ICSI guarantee fertilization?
