Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

A simple fertility procedure where washed and concentrated sperm is placed directly inside the uterus around the time of ovulation.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), often referred to as artificial insemination, is a first-line, less invasive fertility treatment. In an IUI cycle, the woman's ovulation is monitored (either in a natural cycle or with mild ovulation medications). On the day of ovulation, the male partner provides a semen sample, which is processed in the laboratory to isolate the most active, healthy sperm. This concentrated sample is then injected directly into the uterus using a thin catheter, bypassing the cervix and placing the sperm closer to the fallopian tubes to facilitate natural fertilization.

Who is Advised Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

Clinicians generally recommend this therapy path for individuals or couples experiencing the following conditions:

  • Couples with unexplained infertility:
  • Mild male factor infertility or low semen volume:
  • Cervical factor infertility (thick or hostile cervical mucus):
  • Ovulatory dysfunction responsive to ovulation induction:
  • Using donor sperm for single women or severe male factor cases:

Process Overview & Procedure Steps

1

Ovulation Induction

Taking oral medicines or mild injections to stimulate 1-2 egg-bearing follicles.

2

Follicle Monitoring

Periodic ultrasounds to measure follicle size.

3

Trigger Injection

HCG injection to trigger release of the egg at a precise time.

4

Sperm Collection & Processing

Semen wash to separate healthy sperm from seminal fluid.

5

Insemination

Placing the washed sperm into the uterus via a flexible catheter (takes 5-10 minutes, no sedation needed).

🕒 Treatment Timeline

An IUI cycle takes about 2 weeks from the start of monitoring to the insemination, followed by another 2 weeks before a pregnancy check.

📋 Clinical Diagnostics Required

  • Tubal patency check (HSG or laparoscopy) to confirm at least one open fallopian tube
  • Hormone levels review (FSH, LH, AMH)
  • Semen analysis to ensure sufficient post-wash active sperm (ideally > 5-10 million)

Frequently Asked Questions — Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

How is IUI different from IVF?

In IUI, fertilization takes place naturally inside the woman's body (in the fallopian tubes). In IVF, eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, fertilized in a laboratory, and the resulting embryo is placed back in the uterus.

Is bed rest required after IUI?

No. You will lie down for 10-15 minutes immediately after the procedure. After that, you can resume normal daily activities. Heavy lifting or strenuous exercise should be avoided.
